KitchenAid Artisan Mixers - all you need to know

There are now a number of different KitchenAid Artisan Food Mixer models available that have replaced the discontinued KitchenAid KSM150 Artisan Food Mixer. These include the KSM125, KSM156, KSM175 and the most recent variants, the KSM185 and the KSM195. Essentially these machines are identical in size and power and all come with a 5 year KitchenAid guarantee. We thought it would be a good idea to provide a little more information about these replacement models, what has changed and what you get with each of the models, to help you decide on the best KitchenAid Artisan Food Mixer for you.

A brief history of the iconic KitchenAid mixer

What’s in the box?

As mentioned above, there’s little in the way of aesthetic changes between the old and new models, the main difference is what is included with each model. Here is a comprehensive rundown of what comes with each model.

KitchenAid Artisan 125 Mixers (KSM125)

Wire Whisk - this is great for beating eggs, mixing egg whites, whipping cream and making dips. The wires are made from stainless steel and the head is of aluminium construction.

Dough Hook - this tool is for mixing and kneading doughs. Whether you're making pasta, pizza or bread dough, this is the perfect accessory. Made from aluminium and with an anti-stick nylon coating, the dough hook is dishwasher safe.

Flat Beater - the flat beater can deal with heavy mixes. This is the go to tool for cake mixes, icing or mashed potatoes. As with the dough hook, this is made from aluminium with an anti-stick nylon coating and is safe for use in the dishwasher.

4.8L Bowl - the bowl is made from a polished stainless steel. It's the perfect size to prepare both large and small quantities. It has an ergonomic handle and is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.

Colours available: Matte Black, Contour Silver, Dark Pewter and Onyx Black. Almond Cream is also available as part of a Cookie Press Bundle Set.

4.8L Bowl -Depending on the specific model the bowl can either be made from glass (clear or frosted, again depending on model), ceramic, or from polished stainless steel with an attractive hammered finish. It's the perfect size to prepare both large and small quantities. It has an ergonomic handle and is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.

Colours available: Matte Black with Hammered Stainless Steel Bowl, Milkshake with Hammered Stainless Steel Bowl, Candy Apple with Glass Bowl and White with Whisper Floral Ceramic Bowl.

Pouring Shield - the pouring shield fits around the top of the bowl and serves two purposes. Both uses can help reduce kitchen mess. Firstly, it prevents any ingredients from splashing out of the bowl when mixing. Secondly, it provides a handy spout for adding ingredients while mixing.

Flex-Edge Beater - similar to the flat beater, but with a flexible, silicone edge. The flexible edge cleans the edge of the bowl while mixing. This results in a more complete mix and ensures you don't have to stop mixing and use a spatula to clear the edge of the bowl.

3L Bowl - a useful alternative to the 4.8L bowl. The 3L bowl is ideal for mixing smaller quantities. As with the regular bowl, the 3L bowl is made from polished stainless steel.

Colours available: Almond Cream, Dried Rose, Empire Red, Fresh Linen, Honey, Ice Blue, Majestic Yellow, Matcha, Onyx Black, Pistachio, Silk Pink and Velvet Blue. 

KitchenAid Artisan 185 Mixers (5KSM185)

Wire Whisk -  This is great for beating eggs, mixing egg whites, whipping cream and making dips. Made entirely from stainless steel means this wire whisk is dishwasher safe.

Dough Hook - This tool is for mixing and kneading doughs. Whether you're making pasta, pizza or bread dough, this is the perfect accessory. Made from stainless steel, the dough hook is dishwasher safe.

KitchenAid Artisan 195 Mixer (5KSM195)

Wire Whisk - for whipping up light and airy meringues and cream.

Silver-Coated Dough Hook - for kneading dough.

Silver-Coated Flex-Edge Beater - for superior mixing results. The flex-edge scrapes the inside of the bowl as it passes negating the need to scrape down ingredients with a spatula.

Silver-Coated Pastry Beater - horizontal bars can cut in butter straight from the fridge for flaky pastry. Can also be used as a regular paddle for mixing and shredding.

Scraper - handy scraper for cleaning pastry beater.

4.8L Stainless Steel Bowl - can process up to 12 egg whites and 1kg of flour.

3L Stainless Steel Bowl - always handy to have an additional bowl when baking.

Pouring Shield - dual purpose clear shield that allows you to pour in ingredients whilst the machine is mixing and reduces flour from escaping.
